Awarded Centre of Excellence status by the Institute of Quality Assurance (CQI) in 1993.

Auditors who teach

Our tutors are working auditors who understand audits on both sides of the table.

Plain English delivery

We make ISO 9001 clear, useful and less intimidating with a plain English approach.

Is an ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course right for you?

This ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course is for people who need to carry out internal audits of a Quality Management System and already have a reasonable working knowledge of ISO 9001.

It is an intermediate-level course, not a beginner’s walk-through of the standard, clause by clause. Delegates should be comfortable with the application of ISO 9001 already or have completed a foundation level ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness course before attending.

Our course includes a brief recap of key ISO 9001 concepts where this supports the audit exercises, which reinforces the content of an Awareness course — but it's not a substitute for that important, foundational training. The aim of an auditor course is not to teach ISO 9001 in depth, but to help learners connect the clauses to real processes, real evidence and real audit situations.

The course is ideal for people who need to plan audits sensibly, ask better audit questions, gather objective evidence, and write findings that help the business improve — without turning internal auditing into a tick-box exercise.

If you're not sure whether you're ready, speak to us first. We’ll tell you honestly whether Internal Auditor training is the right next step, or whether the 1-day Awareness course would be a better starting point.

Guidance for HR, Training & QHSE Managers

Choose this course when you need staff to carry out internal audits confidently, support your ISO 9001 management system, prepare for external audits or strengthen your internal audit programme.

Learners return with a clearer understanding of ISO 9001, better audit questioning skills and a more structured approach to planning, conducting and reporting audits. And their successful participation on the course will be verified with an SQMC Certificate, representing an auditing qualification recognised by Certification Bodies universally.

Guidance for individuals, career-changers

This course is a strong step if you want to develop practical QMS auditing skills, strengthen your CV, or move towards quality, compliance, supplier assurance or wider QHSE roles.

Successful delegates receive a internationally recognised certificate from the Scottish Quality Management Centre — Scotland’s dedicated ISO auditor training centre.

It is also a sensible 'bridge' from foundation level ISO 9001 Requirements training, to eventually going for your (advanced level) Lead Auditor ticket.

A two-minute taste of Internal Auditor thinking

The full ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course is two days of tutor-led training, practical audit scenarios, discussion and exercises. These quick cards give you a flavour of the way we teach.

Flip each card for a practical audit tip you can use straight away — and a glimpse of the thinking we develop more fully during the course.

Think process, not paperwork
Quick audit tip:

Before you reach for a clause checklist, ask: what is this process meant to achieve, what could go wrong, and what evidence would show it is working?

Refresh the clauses
Quick audit tip:

ISO 9001 clauses make more sense when you connect them to real work. Ask where the requirement shows up in the process, not just where it appears in the manual.

Plan audits that matter
Quick audit tip:

A good internal audit plan should not simply march through clause numbers. It should focus on important processes, risks, objectives, changes and areas where useful evidence can be found.

Choose a useful sample
Quick audit tip:

A sample is not just “whatever file is easiest to find”. Choose examples that help you understand whether the process is controlled, consistent and effective.

Ask better audit questions
Quick audit tip:

Instead of asking, “Do you follow the procedure?” try, “Can you show me how this works in practice?” Better questions lead to better evidence.

Gather sound evidence
Quick audit tip:

Evidence is not just a confident answer. Look for records, observation, interviews and consistency across the process before reaching a conclusion.

Write useful findings
Quick audit tip:

A useful audit finding says what happened, what evidence supports it, and why it matters. Vague reports create arguments. Clear reports create action.

Return in 'solution mode'
Quick audit tip:

Internal auditing is not about catching people out. Done well, it helps the organisation spot risks, remove bottlenecks and improve how work actually gets done.

A practical course, taught by auditors

Internal auditing can go wrong when it becomes too theoretical, too clause-heavy or too obsessed with ticking boxes. SQMC takes a different approach.

Our ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course is delivered by auditors who teach — experienced QMS professionals who understand how audits work in real organisations. They know what it feels like to ask questions, follow evidence, handle awkward moments and write findings that people can actually use.

SQMC has been part of ISO auditor training since the earliest days of professional auditor development in the UK. Our founder, Ian W. Hannah, helped shape the original IRCA “180” Internal Quality Auditor course specification in the early 1990s. In other words, SQMC was not simply following the internal auditor training sector — we helped build it.

Our training is practical, supportive and plain-English. We help learners understand what good auditing looks like, what evidence really means, and how to carry out internal audits in a way that is fair, useful and constructive.

This course supports ISO 9001’s competence and awareness requirements, and gives employers clear evidence that their internal auditors have received structured internal auditor training.

You won’t leave with a folder full of theory and no idea what to do next. Delegates leave with a clearer, more confident approach to auditing their organisation’s Quality Management System — and a globally recognised certificate from a long-established authority in ISO auditor training.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 9001 Internal Auditor training

Is this ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course suitable for beginners?

This course is suitable for people who are new to internal auditing, but not for people who are completely new to ISO 9001.

The ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course is an intermediate-level course. Delegates should already have a reasonable working knowledge of ISO 9001, either through experience, previous training, or SQMC’s ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness course.

If you are not sure whether you are ready, speak to us before booking. We’ll give you honest advice on the best route.

Do I need to complete ISO 9001 Foundation training first?

If you are new to ISO 9001, we strongly recommend completing the foundation level ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness training before attending Internal Auditor training.

The Awareness course is designed specifically to help you understand the ISO 9001 Requirements in a clear and structured way. The Internal Auditor course then builds on that knowledge and shows you how to audit against those Requirements.

Some delegates already have enough ISO 9001 experience to go straight to Internal Auditor level. Others benefit from taking the Awareness course first. We’re happy to talk this through with you, or we can set you a self test!

Will the ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course teach me the ISO 9001 standard?

No — our regular ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course is not a clause-by-clause course on the standard.

The course focuses on internal auditing: planning audits, preparing questions, gathering evidence, reporting findings and supporting improvement. We include a brief refresher on key ISO 9001 Requirements where it helps the audit exercises, but this is not a replacement for dedicated ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness training.

If your main aim is to learn the standard itself, the foundation level ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness course is the better choice.

What if I cannot afford to take both Foundation and Internal Auditor training?

Speak to us before deciding. The ideal route is to understand ISO 9001 first, then learn how to audit it — but we know budgets are not always perfect.

If you cannot take both courses just now, we can help you decide whether you are likely to cope with the Internal Auditor course, what preparation or self study would help beforehand, and whether a payment plan could make either of the routes more manageable.

We won’t pressure you. We’ll simply help you make the best decision for your situation.

What is the difference between ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness and Internal Auditor training?

ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness training helps you understand the standard itself: what the clauses mean in real life, how they fit together, and how they apply inside an organisation.

ISO 9001 Internal Auditor training is different. It teaches you how to audit a Quality Management System certified to the ISO 9001 scheme: how to plan, ask questions, follow evidence, report findings and help the organisation improve.

In simple terms: Requirements Awareness helps you understand ISO 9001. Internal Auditor helps you audit against it.

What is the difference between ISO 9001 Internal Auditor and Lead Auditor training?

ISO 9001 Internal Auditor training is usually best for people who need to carry out audits within their own organisation.

ISO 9001 Lead Auditor training is more advanced. It is designed for people who may need to lead a team of auditors, audit suppliers or external organisations, or develop professional auditing credentials. This is the qualification that auditors from 3rd party Certification Bodies hold.

Many learners follow the Chartered Quality Institute's recommended three stage training path: ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness, then ISO 9001 Internal Auditor, then ISO 9001 Lead Auditor.

What certificate will I receive?

Successful delegates receive an internationally recognised Certificate of Achievement from The Scottish Quality Management Centre, which has a CPD value equivalent to 14 hours.

The course supports the competence and awareness requirements of ISO 9001 clauses 7.2 and 7.3, and helps organisations evidence that internal auditors have received structured training in how to plan, conduct and report internal audits. It is also built around ISO 19011, the international best practice guidance for auditing management systems, including audit principles, audit programmes, conducting audits and auditor competence.

In plain English: this is not just a certificate for the wall. It is practical evidence that the learner has completed structured internal auditor training based on the international standards that govern quality management systems and auditing practice. Furthermore, it verifies that your training was equally relevant to organisations in Scotland, across the UK and anywhere else in the world.

Is this course based on ISO 19011 auditing guidance?

Yes. The course includes practical guidance from ISO 19011, the international best practice for auditing management systems.

We keep this practical. The aim is not to bury delegates in another standard, but to help them understand what good auditing looks like and how to apply it sensibly during internal audits.

Can I attend the ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course online?

Yes. SQMC offers a live online ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course through our Virtual Classroom.

This is tutor-led training, not a pre-recorded course. You still take part in live discussion, practical exercises and group activities, with support from an experienced auditor.

It is a good option if you want interactive training without travel or accommodation costs. And it's ideal for overseas delegates who value SQMC training, making it easily accessible for them regardless of their location!

Can SQMC deliver this ISO 9001 Internal Auditor course in-company?

Yes. SQMC can deliver ISO 9001 Internal Auditor training in-company for your team.

This can be delivered at your site or online. It is often a good option when several people need the same training, or when you want the course discussion to relate more closely to your own processes, documents and internal audit programme.

For in-company training, we can also advise whether your team would benefit from the 1-day ISO 9001 Requirements Awareness first, or tailor the course to build in a condensed foundation session on the standard's clauses.

Is this course useful for HR, Training and QHSE Managers?

Yes. This course is a strong option for HR, Training and QHSE Managers who need staff to carry out internal audits more confidently and competently.

It helps organisations build internal audit capability, support ISO 9001 certification, prepare for external audits and improve how audit findings are reported and followed up.

It is especially useful when you need practical training that gives delegates both audit confidence and a sensible link back to ISO 9001 Requirements.

Will this course help me carry out internal audits at work?

Absolutely! The course is designed to help you return to work able to plan, conduct and report ISO 9001 internal audits with greater confidence.

You will practise audit preparation, questioning, evidence gathering, reporting and follow-up during the course, in a safe and friendly atmosphere. The focus is practical throughout: what to ask, what to look for, what counts as evidence, and how to write findings people can act on.

Can my employer pay by invoice?

Yes. Employers can usually pay by invoice for SQMC training.

If you are booking on behalf of your organisation, use the booking form or contact our team and we’ll help with the practical details.

Do you offer payment plans for self-funders?

Yes. Interest-free payment plans are available for self-funders.

We know training can be a serious investment if you are paying for it yourself. Call 0333 939 0045 and we’ll talk you through the available options.
