ISO 14001 has been updated – are you ready for the 2026 version?

ISO 14001:2026 has now been published, bringing a shift in expectations around areas such as climate, supply chains, leadership accountability, and environmental performance.

If your training is based on ISO 14001:2015, it’s important to ensure your knowledge reflects these updates. Without this, audits may not fully address the revised requirements.

This focused Transition course allows you to update your existing qualification quickly and practically — without the need to repeat a full Internal Auditor course.

Whether you are maintaining your own competence, or preparing your organisation for the transition, this module will bring you up to speed with what has changed, and what it means in practice.

Update or completely re-train?

ISO 14001:2015 has served organisations well for over a decade, and remains a robust and widely adopted Environmental Management Standard. However, the newly published ISO 14001:2026 reflects the changing world in which organisations now operate — including increased focus on climate, supply chains, and stakeholder expectations.

As with previous revisions, there will be a transition period before ISO 14001:2015 is fully withdrawn. During this time, organisations and auditors are expected to update their knowledge and align their Environmental Management Systems with the revised requirements.

Training providers often withdraw Transition courses once this period ends, instead requiring delegates to complete a full Internal Auditor course again. Therefore we advise you prioritise attendance at your earliest convenience.

Please note that this SQMC Transition course is designed to update competence and knowledge. It may not meet the requirements for maintaining personal registration with IRCA, and auditors registered with IRCA should refer to their specific CPD and transition requirements.

Is this mandatory?

The Standard requires it for those already trained to previous versions; the latter of which (2015) will became obsolete in April 2029. While an outdated qualification may be initially treated as an 'Improvement Request' by gracious Certification Auditors, during your organisation's surveillance audit, it will (quite rightly) become a non-conformance on subsequent audits, if not remedied.

Please don't hesitate to contact SQMC if you have any questions.

What will I learn?

This ISO 14001:2026 Transition course focuses on the real-world implications of the updated Environmental Management Standard — not just what has changed, but what those changes mean for auditors, managers, and organisations in practice.

While the structure of the Standard remains familiar, the expectations have moved on. This module will help you understand that shift, and ensure your existing knowledge is fully aligned with the latest requirements.

The most notable areas we will cover during your tuition are:

  • The key themes behind the 2026 revision, including the move towards a more strategic, risk-based and transparent Environmental Management System.
  • The expanded requirements relating to environmental context, including climate change, biodiversity, resource availability, and wider environmental conditions.
  • The increased expectations around leadership accountability, and what this means for environmental policy, decision-making, and organisational responsibility.
  • A clear breakdown of the restructured planning requirements, including:
    • Risks and opportunities
    • Emergency situations
    • The introduction of formal change management
  • The strengthened focus on lifecycle thinking and supply chain control, and how organisations are expected to influence environmental performance beyond their own operations.
  • Updates to performance evaluation, including:
    • Defining audit objectives
    • Stronger monitoring and analysis
    • More structured management review outputs
  • The growing importance of data, transparency, and documented information, including the role of digital tools and real-time performance monitoring.
  • How continual improvement is now more tightly integrated into the system, linking audits, corrective action, and environmental performance more directly.
Practical application

As with all SQMC training, the focus is not just on understanding the Standard, but on applying it.

Throughout the module, we will explore:

  • How audits will need to adapt to the new expectations
  • What organisations must do to transition their existing EMS
  • Where common gaps are likely to arise during Certification audits

This ensures that, by the end of the course, you are not only familiar with ISO 14001:2026 — but confident in applying it.
